My trucking pay progression

I worked in every one of these positions. Compare my documented time and results as a company driver and lease operator at Knight Transportation, an owner-operator leased to Landstar hauling dry-van power only, and an owner-operator running my own dry van on the open spot market under my authority, including my current Amazon Relay results.

Market context matters: my Landstar and authority periods occurred during a freight recession that drove down rates and significantly reduced my wages. My company-driver and lease-operator positions paid by the mile, giving those roles more protection from the market downturn. My Knight lease included a $450 weekly truck payment, but I paid the truck off before moving to Landstar and later running under my own authority, so neither owner-operator period included a truck payment.

Notes from the road
I documented 37 weeks as an owner-operator leased to Landstar, hauling dry-van freight power only with a paid-off truck and no truck payment. This period took place during a freight recession, when weaker rates significantly reduced my earning potential. Even in that market, I reported $70,762.11 net—about $1,912 per week and $0.90 profit per mile.

What the channel is really about

Trucking The Seven Seas documents trucking pay from the inside, using real settlement data, public spreadsheets, and long-form video breakdowns instead of vague averages or sales language.

The channel follows Tim's path through company driving, lease operating, leased-on owner-operator work, running authority, and current Amazon Relay power-only numbers so drivers can compare the tradeoffs before making their own move.

Example consultation request

I am considering becoming an owner-operator and want to make sure I understand the financial risks before signing a lease. I currently have two years of company-driving experience and would appreciate your honest assessment of the offer and numbers below.

  1. Does the pay structure in this lease look competitive?
  2. Which deductions or fees should concern me most?
  3. How much should I budget each month for maintenance and repairs?
  4. What weekly revenue would I need to cover my fixed expenses?
  5. How much money should I keep in an emergency reserve?
  6. What should I verify before accepting the company's fuel program?
  7. Are there any contract terms that could make leaving the lease difficult?
  8. How should I estimate my taxes and take-home pay?
  9. Would purchasing a truck be a better option than this lease?
  10. Based on these numbers, would you accept this offer?

Thank you for reviewing my situation. Please keep my name and identifying details private during the livestream, and feel free to combine related questions or point out anything important that I may have overlooked.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Are taxes included?

Personal income taxes are not automatically included. The Owner-Operator calculator starts with a 0% tax reserve, so enter the percentage you plan to reserve before relying on its projected net income.

Is the truck paid off?

The Knight lease included a $450 weekly truck payment. Tim paid the truck off before moving to Landstar, so the Landstar, authority, and Amazon Relay results do not include a truck payment.

What does power only mean?

Power only means the owner-operator supplies the tractor while the customer or carrier supplies the trailer. Tim currently runs primarily Amazon Relay power-only work using 37-hour blocks.

Why were Landstar and authority earnings lower?

Those periods occurred during a freight recession. Lower spot-market rates reduced revenue while Tim still carried the operating costs of the truck. The Knight company and lease positions were paid by the mile and were more insulated from that downturn.

How often are Amazon Relay numbers updated?

The Amazon Relay figures are scheduled to be checked against the 2026 spreadsheet every two weeks. When the spreadsheet totals change, the Pay Progression figures are updated from that source.

Are consultation clients kept anonymous?

Tim uses reasonable efforts to remove names, contact information, and direct identifiers before the livestream. Questions may be quoted or paraphrased, and complete anonymity cannot be guaranteed if a submission includes distinctive or identifying details.
